How to Schedule Online Lessons:
Message your teacher in the portal to request a Zoom lesson. On the day of your lesson, click “Join Online” next to the lesson in your schedule to join your teacher’s virtual classroom.
Here are a few tips to make the most of your upcoming online lesson with Cultivate!
Our online lessons are all done through the Zoom app. Please make sure you have the latest version of Zoom installed on your device.
Zoom Settings: Zoom has setting specifically for music lessons that will dramatically improve the sound quality. The setting is called “original sound for musicians.” If this setting is not enabled it may be difficult to hear instruments, backing tracks or metronomes. For instructions on how to enable this setting, see the following link from the Zoom website.
Camera Angle: For instrumental lessons, be sure that you are able to set up your device so that the teacher can see your hands and your face at the same time. This may require buying a tripod or placing the device on a stand. Be sure to test this out before the lesson.
Second Device: If you need to use a metronome or any backing tracks during your lesson, you will need a second device. It may not be possible for the teacher to hear audio coming from the device being used for the Zoom meeting. It is also helpful if any sheet music or chord charts are printed off or view on another device.
Young Students: For students age 5-7, we ask that a parent be present during the trial lesson to help the student stay focused. This may not be necessary for every lesson but it is important for the first couple of lessons while the teacher and student are getting to know each other. A teacher may also request that an adult be in the room every week if they feel the student is having trouble focusing.
Joining the Lesson: When it’s time for your lesson, log into your Opus1 account, scroll down to the day’s lesson and click “join online.” This link will only be active starting 15 minutes before the lesson’s start time. This link will open Zoom on your device and connect you to the teacher’s room. The teacher will let you join the meeting at the lesson time.
